Lovejoy British Shorthairs

About us

We acquired our first British Shorthairs in 1984, a red Spotted, Dubolly Red Bubbles, her bicolour litter sister and a blue, Reiond Sweet William. All the Lovejoy cats are descended from Lovejoy Sugaranspice, daughter of Bubbles and William’s litter brother, Gr Ch Reiond Just Dandy, (William having been neutered and became Gr Pr).

We were very fortunate to start with such good cats, as we had never even seen any British Shorthairs when we first became involved with the breed.

Our first stud cat was Vectensian Redhot Lover, from Pat Hoare, who registered her first Red Classic, Ch Vectensian Coppereyes, in 1947. All our reds, including Bubbles, can be traced back to her in an unbroken line.
Initially we produced dilute and dominant selfs, torties and tabbies, but since 2001 we have specialised exclusively in red classic and spotted tabbies.

Naming our cats

Each kitten registered since 1991 has been named according to an alphabetical scheme, one letter per year. Classics have names associated with Classical music (eg Lohengrin, Calaf, Prima Donna), Spotties with Literature,(eg Joe Gargery, Emmeline) dilutes were song titles (eg Chantilly Lace) and torties were flowers.
